Lost Planet Extreme Condition Summary

Lost Planet:  Extreme Condition is a third-person shooter developed by Capcom for the XBox 360 and PC.  The game places players in the role of amnesiac Wayne Holden as he traverses the frozen planet of E.D.N. III in search of his forgotten identity and a solution to make the planet permanently habitable by humanity.  Players will fight both on foot and in massive bipedal mechs called Vital Suits against the Akrid (insect-like creatures adapted to the icy environment) and other humans intent to stop him.  On foot, Wayne has access to a grappling hook that will allow him to access out-of-the-way areas or simply dangle from the ceiling while peppering his foes with machine-gun fire.  Wayne is encouraged not to loiter in his task, as his thermal energy steadily depletes while exposed to the environment.  This same energy also refills Wayne's life bar when injured, and can only be replenished by taking the stores left behind by defeated enemies.

The majority of the game finds Wayne set against dozens of enemies in an open battlefield.  The open design of these sections allows players to approach each battle in a variety of ways, either by clever application of the grappling hook or by stealing his enemy's weapons (including the powerful Vital Suits) and turning them against his aggressors.  Lost Planet also toys with the player's sense of scale by squaring off diminuitive Wayne against monstrous enemies many times his size.  Many of these can be dismembered piece-by-piece with shots to their appropriate weak points, tipping the battle in Wayne's favor with every piece he manages to chip away.

Lost Planet also contains a 16-player online multiplayer mode for which two additional map packs have become available over XBox Live, each containing two maps and costing 400 Points.  A third map pack, currently without a firm release date, will be released for free sometime in the future.  There are four multiplayer modes to choose from, ranging from simple deathmatch to the objective based Post Grab, where two teams compete for control of Thermal Posts.  The mechanics of the game's single-player campaign carry over to the multiplayer portion, so players are encouraged to make use of their grappling hooks and Vital Suits in order to steal their opponents' valuable Thermal Energy.
