Far Cry Summary
Far Cry is a first person shooter developed by Crytek. The game was released on March 24, 2004. The game introduced a new engine, called the “CryENGINE,” for Far Cry. This engine used a new rendering system which made for more detailed environments and allowed for smoother transitions between areas with less loading. The other feature that stands out is the advanced artificial intelligence (AI) of the game. The computer knows to call for back-up, how to flank the players, use vehicles and other subtle aspects for when they are not in combat mode. They can chat with each other about random things or what is currently happening in the game. They also do random things like push-ups or fishing while waiting for combat.
Summary
The hero, Jack Carver, is hired to escort Valerie
Constantine to take her to an uncharted island. He drops her off, then is
attacked. He survives only to find himself on the island with only his a guide,
Doyle, to help him find Val and escape back to civilization. He is on a
communication system, similar to Resident
Evil 4 or F.E.A.R. Basically this
is the depth of the story, as the point of the game is to outwit and kill the
many men and creatures the player finds along the way, which become
increasingly more and more violent and difficult as the game goes on. The story
is not deep, but at the same time not needed. Trying to outsmart the AI,
using the different vehicles found along the way and enjoying the beautiful
graphics are the main pluses of the game.
Extras
There is a level-editor in the game which can be fun for
those who which to do a little creating of their own. There is also a
multi-player option, though it is nothing special and has not taken off like
games such as Halo.
New
There were several Far Cry games developed for consoles. Far Cry: Instincts was developed for the
Xbox and released in September of 2005, received great reviews. Crytek followed
that up with Far Cry Instincts Evolution
in March of 2006, which was a similar game, featuring more open environments
than the first game. Far Cry Instincts
Predator for the Xbox 360 was also released in March 2006, but it was more
of a port than a new title. In terms of content, there was little for gamers to
find that owned the first two Xbox games.
There was also a Wii game, Far Cry Vengance, which was released during the holiday season of 2006, but it received nothing but bad reviews for horrendous graphics and shaky controls.
