Quake 4 Summary

Quake 4 is a First Person Shooter from iD Software running on the Doom 3 engine. Unlike the multiplayer-only Quake 3, Quake 4 has an engrossing single player campaign that keeps you on your toes. Quake 4 starts where Quake 2 left off, and this time, it’s bigger, prettier, and your character has a name: Cain. His missions is to bring down the alien Strogg for good.

You’ll receive your objectives through audio queues either directly from commanding officials, or over your headset. The voice-overs are well acted with each character feeling different from the last. So much so, that you’ll actually start to feel emotionally bonded with them at certain points.

Unlike the previous Quake titles, Quake 4 makes you feel like you’re in the middle of a war by throwing squad-mates into the mix. The squad-mates, unfortunately, cannot be controlled in any way at all. But thankfully, they’re usually pretty nimble on their feet, and quick on the trigger. These soldiers hold their own, and while the A.I. almost always does a great job, there are a couple instances where your teammates will get in your way during a firefight. You might not die as a result, but it’s damn annoying.

Quake 4 has the usual assortment of guns at the player’s disposal including the Lightning Gun, Rail Gun, Shotgun, Machine Gun, and something gamers have been yearning for since Doom 3 – flashlights attached to guns. Rejoice!

Running on the year-old Doom 3 engine, Quake 4 still looks fantastic. The game takes every “Wow” factor from Doom 3 and turns it up to 11. The areas are bigger, the lighting is superb, and the frame rate is silky smooth.

Quake 4 is available for PC and Xbox 360.
