Lord of the Rings Online: Shadows of Angmar
Lord Of The Rings Online Summary
The Lord of the Rings Online: Shadows of Angmar is a MMORPG brought to you by Turbine: the same folks responsible for the highly addictive Asheron's call series. Carrying the "Lord of the Rings" title means the game has a lot to live up to and, with the popularity of World of Warcraft, tough competition as well. Lord of the Rings Online brings to MMORPG's the infamous lore from the J. R. R. Tolkien's books and will bring players right into Middle Earth. Lord of the Rings Online, like most other top-notch MMORPG's is pay-to-play and does require a monthly subscription fee.
Level 1
The Lord of the Rings Online takes place within Middle Earth, during the same period of time that book took place, and is a persistent world full of other players questing and socializing. Like any other MMORPG, players begin by creating an avatar and hop into the persistent world as a level 1. Players will grow in strength primarily throughPvE (Player vs. Environment) combat and questing.
PvMP?
One of the more innovative features of Lord of the Rings Online is PvMP or "Player vs. Monster Player". Unlocked at level 10, Monster Play allows players to become level 50 monsters! Monster characters can attack other non-monster player-characters within a restricted region, complete quests, and even become enhanced by the use of Destiny Points.
Unconventional Magic
Unlike games like World of Warcraft, Lord of the Rings Online does not allow the player to make a straight-forward magic-wielding "wizard". Instead, magic is generated through the "Lore system"; the use of items such as artifacts. In addition to the "Lore system", the "Power system" uses a power bar that allows for players to issue special attacks.
Deeds, Titles, and Traits
In Lord of the Rings Online, players obtain titles and traits by way of their deeds. Titles are largely cosmetic and vary from common to very rare. Traits give players different bonuses and abilities. "Virtue" traits are fairly common and are acquired by completing general goals. There are "Class" traits that are specific to an individual class and "Racial" traits specific to an individual race. Finally, there are "Legendary" traits which are both the hardest to get and provide the greatest bonus.
Races
The four playable races are Man, Elf, Dwarf, and Hobbit
Classes
There are seven classes in all, some playable only by particular races:
Burglar - Man, Hobbit - Rogue-like support character
Captain - Man - Well balanced, Buffer, can control a Pet, Off-Tank
Champion - Man, Elf, Dwarf - Master of Offense; AoE (Area of effect) dmg., DPS (Damage-Per-Second), Off-Tank
Guardian - All - Defensive warrior; Tank
Hunter - All - Ranged; Offensive nuker
Lore-Master - Man, Elf - Powerful buffer, de-buffer, crowd control, can control a Pet
Minstrel - All - Shout and Sing buffs and de-buffs, Can revive the fallen
Work, Work
In Lord of the Rings Online, you cannot choose a profession but instead may choose a vocation that is comprised of 3 professions. The professions grouped in a vocation generally work together but only to an extent which makes others with different vocations valuable. The vocations are as follows:
Armorer: Prospector, Metalsmith, and Tailor
Armsman: Prospector, Weaponsmith, and Woodworker
Explorer: Forester, Tailor, and Prospector
Historian: Farmer, Scholar, and Weaponsmith
Tinker: Prospector, Jeweller, and Cook
Woodsman: Forester, Woodworker, and Farmer
Yeoman: Farmer, Cook, and Tailor
In the End
Lord of the Rings takes the well-known controls and easy camera of World of Warcraft and combines these good elements with a Lord of the Rings environment. Definitely a great MMORPG for fans of Lord of the Rings and its incredible lore.
