Starcraft Summary
Developed by Blizzard Entertainment, Starcraft is
the most successful real time strategy game of all time. It’s fast pace, constant
improvements, and myriad possibilities for attack and defense have kept it at
the forefront of strategy gaming ever since its release in 1998.
The game contains three diverse, but ultimately
balanced races – Terran, Protoss, and Zerg. On the spectrum of play style,
Terran and Zerg are at opposite ends with Protoss squarely stuck in the middle.
The human Terrans are a slower and stronger force, and the alien hive Zerg are
much faster while also being much weaker. These differences in play style force
the player to be at tip top performance. What makes a good strategy for a
Terran or Protoss force might not be a good strategy for a Zerg force, and vice
versa.
Despite only being in 2D, Starcraft has aged
surprisingly well, and in fact this may have been one of the reasons for its
success. Unlike 3D first person shooters where a person with lower system
requirements might have a more difficult time, system requirements have never been an issue in Starcraft. Every
Starcraft player is on an equal playing field, and this is what keeps people
coming back for more after nearly 10 years.
